Narayan Bali is a traditional ritual performed for the peace of departed ancestors, especially those whose last rites could not be completed in the proper way. Families who follow the Pitru tradition perform it with a trained pandit as an act of remembrance and respect. It is often described together with Nag Bali, and the two are sometimes done as Narayan Nagbali.
According to religious belief, offering prayers and Pind Daan for ancestors brings their souls peace and in turn brings blessings to the family. Families usually choose this puja when a pandit suggests it after seeing the kundli, when a family member passed away in an unexpected way, or as part of a long-held family custom.
The ritual is usually spread over a few days, and the pandit confirms the exact schedule when you book.
Ujjain has long been known for ancestor rites. Devotees commonly perform Pitru karma on the banks of the Shipra, at Ram Ghat and Siddhavat. These places are mentioned in many local traditions, and families from different states visit the city for this purpose, especially during Pitru Paksha.
Pitru Paksha (the fortnight before Navratri), Amavasya and specific tithis suggested by the pandit are considered suitable. The pandit checks the panchang and your family details to choose a day.
Pitru Paksha is a sixteen-day period in the month of Bhadrapada (September-October) when Hindus remember their ancestors through Shraddha, tarpan and charity. Each ancestor is remembered on the tithi on which he or she passed away, and Sarva Pitru Amavasya, the last day, is for all ancestors. Narayan Bali is a longer ritual that families may choose in addition to the yearly Shraddha.
Families usually feed Brahmins, donate food or clothes to the needy, and feed cows and birds as part of the ritual. Many also plant a tree in memory of their ancestors. These acts of kindness are considered part of the tradition and are done according to the family’s capacity.
Because the ritual takes more than a day, plan your stay in Ujjain in advance. Ask the pandit about the number of people who may attend, the items to bring and the daily timings. Visiting Mahakaleshwar and the Shipra ghats in the same trip is common for many families.
Families who plan ancestor rites often also ask about other pujas. You can read about Kaal Sarp Dosh Puja booking and costs, Navgrah Shanti Puja, Rudrabhishek Puja in Ujjain and Maha Mrityunjaya Jaap. The Puja Services page lists every puja in one place.
Ask the pandit how many days the ritual will take, which days are suitable in the coming months, how many family members can attend, and what you need to bring. Ask what the fee covers before you travel. You can ask all of this on a call with Pandit Yogesh Vyas on 9009320644.
Generally, a family member such as a son or other close relative performs it, as the pandit advises.
Families perform it for various reasons. The pandit will explain according to your family tradition.
